David Oreck , the 79-year-old vacuum
cleaner tycoon, will return to his hometown, Duluth, to share his business
insights and accept the keys to the city today. During an address in the
University of Minnesota Duluth's Montague Hall, the founder and chairman of Oreck
Corp. will talk about what it takes to build a successful brand. The noon
event is free and open to the public.
Oreck launched his company in 1963, producing lightweight
upright vacuum cleaners mainly for the domestic hotel industry.
The machines proved popular, and today they can be found in many homes.
The company still manufactures all its vacuum cleaners in the United States.
It employs about 1,500 people at its New Orleans headquarters and
manufacturing plant in Long Beach, Mississippi.
The Oreck name should sound familiar to many longtime
Duluthians. David's father, Abe R. Oreck , served as
president of the First Street Department Store at 131 W. First St.
